The aim of the conference is to clear away popular misconceptions and to clarify the historical origins and the philosophical and spiritual nature of Rosicrucianism – a movement that came to light in Christian Europe during the period following the Reformation of the sixteenth century, and which is a central feature of Western Esotericism.

Papers to be presented will consider the background to the Rosicrucian manifestos, the foundation documents of the movement; the intentions of the authors of these manifestos; the development over four centuries of the various societies, Orders and other institutions that have styled or considered themselves as ‘Rosicrucian’; the influence on art, literature, popular culture and society in general of the concept of Rosicrucianism; the essential spiritual and philosophical nature of Rosicrucianism, and its significance for western spirituality.

The speakers at this international conference are drawn from a wide spectrum of experts and authorities in the fields of Rosicrucianism and Western Esotericism, with two keynote papers to be delivered by Professor John Warwick Montgomery, author of The Cross and the Crucible, a seminal and magisterial study of J.V. Andrea’s The Chemical Wedding; and
Wouter Hanegraaff, Professor of the History of Hermetic Philosophy at the University of
Amsterdam, and President of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism.

'Mirror of the Rosicrucian Wisdom'
by Theophilus Schweighardt, 1617

Wisdom (saith Solomon) is to a man an infinite Treasure,
for she is the Breath of the Power of God,
and a pure Influence that floweth from the Glory of the Almighty.

She is the Brightness of Eternal Light,
and an undefiled Mirror of the Majesty of God,
and an Image of his Goodness;

she teacheth us Soberness and Prudence,
Righteousness and Strength;

she understands the Subtilty of words, and Solution of dark sentences;
she foreknoweth Signs and Wonders, and what shall happen in time to come;
with this Treasure was our first Father Adam fully endued...

Fama Fraternitatis

**

The Order of the Rose and Cross exists to provide an ideal forum in which Rosicrucianism, in its traditional form, can be studied, interpreted and discussed in depth communally, by Christian esotericists of any nation who are fluent in English and who are committed to following the rule of life and faith set out in the Fama Fraternitatis.

The structure and working of the Order are based upon those of the historical Rosicrucian institutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but do not reflect the restricted nature of such institutions.
